Course Objective and Example Corriculum
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The learner will: Develop a basic understanding of a wellness lifestyle.
Appraise one’s level of wellness and identify positive changes that will enable one to strive toward high-level wellness.
Develop an action plan for lifestyle changes that includes: forming a plan for good nutrition, overcoming the diet and weight obsession, selecting and participating in an aerobic exercise program, and managing stress.
Analyze and assume responsibility for one’s lifestyle with respect to prevention of disease.
Recognize one’s responsibility in the health-care market.
Be aware of and assume responsibility for personal safety.
Manage one’s life in terms of sexual behaviors, disease, and substance use.
Become a responsible health-care consumer.
MAJOR TOPICS: Components of wellness. Importance of a wellness lifestyle. Nutrition assessment that results in planning for good nutrition Eating behaviors; eating disorders Obesity; weight management Cardiovascular health and wellness Exercise for fitness and leisure: increasing cardiorespiratory endurance, building muscular strength, building muscular endurance, and improving flexibility Identifying stressors and managing stress Assuming responsibility for substance use Making decisions concerning sexual behaviors with concern for sexually transmitted diseases Assessing and assuming responsibility for all aspects of one’s health.
ACTIVITIES:
The text provides several assessments that you are expected to complete for purposes of assessing your health and lifestyle. Results, if appropriate, may be applied to your exercise and nutritional analysis papers. The various assessments contribute to understanding of course material and allow you to analyze health behavior, assess readiness for lifestyle change, assess eating patterns, calculate caloric expenditure through exercise, clarify perceptions of the effects of smoking, determine stressors, determine risk for cardiovascular disease, and assess medical / health history.
TEACHING STRATEGIES:
Information will be disseminated largely through lecture-discussion; Participantswill be encouraged to question and share concerns and understandings. Segments of video and cassette tapes will be used when appropriate. Should time permit, additional material from text chapters will be covered.
