Mitochondrial Rejuvenation

Fibromyalgia with IV NAD and Mitochondrial Rejuvenation

MitochondrialMitochondrial plays very crucial in the body. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the body as it is where energy is made. They are organelles that take in nutrients, break them down, and create energy rich molecules for the cell. Many of the reactions involved in cellular respiration happen in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the working organelles that keep the cell full of energy. Different cells have different amounts of energy. While there are cells that have no mitochondrion, the muscle cells need to have lots of these mitochondria as they need lots of energy to accomplish their functions. Neurons are also important in the body and they too need good amount of mitochondria to serve their purposes, however they do not need as much mitochondria as the muscle cells. These organelles are very vital in the cells as they generate energy which is the mostly utilized by the cells therefore any dysfunction within the mitochondria can cause serious problems such as fatigue which is a common symptom of those suffering from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Recently researchers have been able to establish a link between mitochondrial dysfunction and fibromyalgia. Findings of researchers are pointing at mitochondrial dysfunction as a possible cause of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, joint stiffness, and fatigue. The condition is chronic but pain comes and goes and moves about the body. The cause of this disorder is unknown and therefore it is often misdiagnosed or unrecognized and is most of the times complicated by anxiety and mood disorders. this is a common disorder that according to the American College of Rheumatology diagnosis criteria affects about 3-5% of women, most of whom are between ages 20 and 50, but only 0.5- 1.6% of men. This disease is more common in adults than in children but it affects women more than men. The exact cause of fibromyalgia isn’t yet known but researchers have been trying to join dots and come up with explanations to support the possible causes that they have come up with. Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the possible causes that have been stated by many researchers.

About 6 years ago, researchers showed that the muscles of fibromyalgia patients did not have adequate amounts of mitochondria. these researchers also noticed that even the shape of mitochondria in the muscle tissues of the fibromyalgia patients was irregular as compared to control subjects who were in the of the same age. However these findings were not explained and this prompted biologists from Spain known as Mario Cordero, Ph.D. and Placid Nava’s, Ph.D., to begin looking into an enzyme that is needed by the mitochondria: Co-Enzyme-Q10 (CoQ10). CoQ10 is an essential enzyme for detoxifying or neutralizing nasty waste products produced by the cells. The wastes that are produced by the cells are often reactive oxygen species since they react with and degrade anything that they come in contact with. Higher levels of reactive oxygen species have been found in patients with fibromyalgia and the higher levels tend to correspond to more pain. Just a year ago Cordero and Nava’s found that the CoQ10 content in the blood cells of fibromyalgia patients was 40 percent less than age-matched healthy control subjects. However, in the nutrient-rich liquid portion of the blood, the CoQ10 concentration for fibromyalgia patients was double that of the healthy controls. This imbalance in distribution of this enzyme has made Cordero and his team to do more research and establish the cause of this imbalance. These researchers noticed that the level of ROS was higher in fibromyalgia patients and this leads to programmed destruction of mitochondria.

When the levels of ROS are elevated it will lead to more tissue damage, nerve irritation. The imbalance in CoQ10 and loss of mitochondria could be linked to other symptoms that commonly occur in fibromyalgia. A reduction in mitochondria could lead to muscle weakness, more fatigue, and less ability to tolerate physical activities without flaring with more pain and exhaustion. This therefore means that if mitochondria can be rejuvenated then it can help in reducing the pain as well as support fibromyalgia treatment.

Rejuvenating Mitochondria with IV NAD

MitochondrialNAD is an abbreviation of Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is a coenzyme that is present in all living cells. The compound is a dinucleotide; this simply means that it consists of two nucleotides joined through their phosphate groups. One nucleotide contains an adenine base and the other nicotinamide. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide exists in two forms, an oxidized and reduced form abbreviated as NAD+ and NADH respectively. The NAD and the NADH are crucial in the production of energy in the mitochondria. What happens after eating is that the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats from our diet provide the building blocks to our bodies. Energy that is produced from citric acid cycle makes NAD and links it to hydrogen forming NADH which enters the electron transport chain in the mitochondria and is sparked with oxygen which breaks the nutrients to give energy through oxidation. This energy enables the heart to beat sufficiently and enable muscle contraction providing cellular energy that is required by the body cells to function. In fibromyalgia patients the level of mitochondria is low plus they are deformed. when a patient is put through an IV NAD therapy the level of NAD in the body is going to be high hence will be utilized in making energy in the mitochondria and help quell fatigue. NAD is also known to remove toxins like ROS that accumulate in the cells leading to programmed mitochondrial damage.

Diet for Adrenal Fatigue

Choose the Safest Diet for Adrenal Fatigue

DietThe need for a good diet in the body can never be underestimated. Your food ought to be your medicine. Most of the diseases that we now suffer from are as a result of poor diet. From elementary schools in home science lessons pupils are taught on the benefits of balanced diet, however most of these lessons are never carried out of the classrooms; they are confined within the walls of the classroom and children enjoy sampling some of the ‘sweetest’ delicacies or snacks that end up to be a slow poison in their lives. Today children are suffering from various diseases that are a corollary to poor diet even adults are victims and this explain why obesity has since become a world threat. With proper diet very many diseases can be prevented or even fought and won. To begin with let’s know what adrenal fatigue is.

What is adrenal fatigue?

The term Adrenal Fatigue refers to a stress-related condition that is suffered when the adrenal glands, hypothalamus and pituitary gland are functioning below their optimal level. If the adrenal glands are new to you then you need to spare some time out of your rather busy schedule and learn on their functions, it by doing this that you will know how important they are and the need to take care of them well by eating the foods that will maintain their good health. the adrenal glands perform very vital roles that all aims at maintaining our good health but most importantly they control how the body respond to stress by releasing hormones like cortisol, DHEA and epinephrine, which are used to regulate your heart rate, immune system, energy storage and improve the general health and stability.

The adrenal glands will weaken when they are overstimulated for a long period of time. Some of the common causes of adrenal fatigue include long term exposure to stress that may stem from job, family, relationships. Another cause of adrenal fatigue is long-term suffering from chronic diseases. After a long term exposure to stressing environment the adrenal glands will be weakened so much that they will be incapacitated to perform the ordinary functions they ought to perform. When the adrenal glands have failed to perform optimally, a person will begin having such feelings of tiredness, mild depression and lack of enthusiasm. Sleep is a known cure but with adrenal fatigue even sleeping for long hours still leaves the body exhausted. This will make the person to resort drinking caffeinated drinks, indulge in sugary drinks and other stimulants which will eventually lead to even more complex problems. To solve this problem well there is need to have good diet to restore the functions of the adrenal glands.

These are some of the foods that are highly recommended adrenal fatigue patients

To help eradicate the dangers of adrenal fatigue and help restore the functions of the adrenal glands there is need to avoid some foods that affects our adrenal glands adversely and eat those foods that will nourish our adrenal glands. Some of the foods that are highly recommended for adrenal fatigue patients are not common foods you will interact with but seeking them will be worthwhile. Here they are.

Seaweeds are rich in minerals and phytonutrients that are not available on our regular diets. They can be made into a salad or starfry and helps in boosting the nutritional content of our daily meals. Currently there are supermarkets that stock different varieties of seaweeds which anybody suffering from adrenal fatigue can sample and reap the nutritional benefits they contain. The benefits of seaweeds were brought to surface by a research titled Nutritional and digestive health benefits of seaweed that was done by University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

Fermented drinks

Some fermented drinks are very healthy to our adrenal glands and can help restore them and fight adrenal fatigue. Some of the fermented drinks are not only healthy to the adrenal glands but also to the overall digestive health and the immune system. Unlike in most parts of the world, fermented drinks are not yet common in North American market but they can be found in some health stores plus you can make your own. The fermented drinks are good for those suffering from adrenal fatigue as they are very rich in minerals and good bacteria that help in improving digestion and nutrient absorption. Some of the good drinks you can look foe in health stores include kvass and kombucha.

Bone broth

DietBones make a crucial part of animals. Apart from just being the framework on which meat is supported, the bones are very rich in minerals that can be very helpful to us. The bone marrow is a part of bones that is very rich in nutritional content and this explains why the bone soup is a highly valued drink in some parts of the world even today. The bone marrow helps in reducing inflammation, boost the immune system and encourage healthy cholesterol. It can also provide essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are easily absorbable in our intestines. It is a good broth for adrenal fatigue patients and it can be easily made at home.

Here is a general diet guide on how to fight adrenal fatigue. Reduce caffeine intake as well as avoid highly sugary foods as they are not very healthy for the adrenal health. Stay hydrated ‘the eight glass a day’ sentence should make meaning to you. Adrenal health is important to the general well-being of a person and that is whey here at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center we are committed to availing the best integrative approaches to treatment of diseases. Current Stem Cell Treatments for Orthopedic Conditions

Current Stem Cell Treatments for Orthopedic Conditions

The stem cells have a unique ability to divide and become more specialized cells forming cells like bone, blood, or muscle. It is this ability that makes them attractive agents in many areas of medicine.  They can therefore be used to fight very many diseases in the regenerative medicine. Another advantage of stem cell therapy treatments is that autologous stem cell transport is made possible. This means that a person may be treated by doctors harvesting the stem cells from the patient and having the stem cells reimplanted into the same patient after finding out what was lacking in the patient. This reduces risks of infection as well as rejection which are helpful to the patient.

Today the stem cell therapy has become the game changing approach to treatment of orthopedic conditions. The ability of these stem cells to differentiate into more specialized cells has made them a valuable target in treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Particularly the use of bone marrow stromal cells has attracted the attention of researchers who are in pursuit of finding out how these stem cells can be applied to end human misery caused by some diseases.

Stem cells are a unique type of cells, unlike the other cells in the body the stem cell have the ability to self-renew, they have the ability to divide several times giving rise to differentiated cells which are suited for specific functions hence can be used to replace or regenerate worn out cells in the body causing pain and discomfort. They can form cardiac, liver, fat, bone, cartilage, nerve, and connective tissue cells among other more specialized cells. Autologous stem cell therapy harnesses the regenerative power of your body’s own stem cells as a treatment option for degenerative orthopedic conditions.

Today there are hospitals that have embraced the use of stem cells therapy in treating orthopedic conditions that were rather not easily treated in the past.  They offer this autologous stem cell therapy, which embraces the regenerative power of mesenchymal stem cells to give patients another treatment option for dealing with orthopedic conditions such as osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions.  Patients who have the following diseases can benefit from stem cell therapy;

  • Degenerative Joint Changes, Including Osteoarthritis
  • Disc-related Back Pain
  • Meniscus Tears
  • Non-Union Fractures
  • Avascular Necrosis
  • Bone Loss
  • Cartilage Defects
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Tendonopathies

Orthopedic Areas in which Stem Cell Therapy is applicable

Spine – the stem cell therapy is applicable in treatment of the degenerated intervertebral disk which is known to cause pain and morbidity to many patients. The stem cell therapy brings into the field of regenerative medicine some bits of effectiveness.  In treatment of spine, patients who fail to respond to conservative medicine are left with one option-surgery that may have limited success and is also very invasive. Cell-based tissue treatments, including mesenchymal stem cell injections for degenerative disc subjects have been shown to diminish the incidence of low back pain, with clinical results noting improvement in back pain and regeneration of the disc tissue. In cases where spinal fusions are necessary, the use of stem cells through bone marrow aspirate has shown greater success in obtaining fusion through bone formation as compared to standard fusion techniques. Daily the number of institutions using the stem cell therapy to treat orthopedic conditions is increasing.

Articular Cartilage – when the articular cartilage is damaged, the potential to repair it are limited and this can often lead to arthritic diseases many years later. This damage may be caused by injury. The vulnerability of the articular cartilage makes it important for it to be well handled in cases of injury. studies that have been done on the applicability of the stem cell therapy to repair damaged articular cartilage have shown that stem cell therapy have favorable outcomes in this area than current techniques of micro fracture and autologous chondrocyte implantation. Most studies use mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow.

orthopedic therapyOsteonecrosis – Osteonecrosis or avascular ischemia of the hip can be associated with progression to an advanced arthritic joint. Standard treatment for osteonecrosis has included cord decompression with limited results. Stem cell therapy holds key to success in this area of orthopedic treatment. Studies on this area have shown that patients treated with mesenchymal stem cells improved than those treated with cord decompression.

Bone – some damages on the bone may require transplantation of the bone plus other bone components. This is the effective way of restoring the bone structure. Being that the mesenchymal stem cells can be differentiated into bone cells and be used to replace the damaged bone components, stem cell therapy becomes the most appropriate treatment for bone damage.

Tendons and Ligaments –  Autografts, allografts, and resorbable materials have been used to repair defects in tendons and ligaments however these methods puts the life of the patient at risk which may include formation of scars, donor morbidity and even tissue rejection. With autologous stem cell transplant all these risks are alleviated plus the mesenchymal stem cells may also be used alongside tissue allografts as this gives better results by improving the biochemical properties of the tissue allografts.
